Chas. E. Haukole was born at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Sept 23rd, 1858. He died at his home at Eagle Grove, Iowa, July 31st, 1918. His fatal illness was of practically two years duration. He was injured when he jumped from his engine at Burt, Jan. 28th, 1916. He was pensioned by the company Oct. 1st, 1916. He suffered from several strokes of paralysis and finally lost control of all his faculties and peacefully passed away, suffering little or no pain.

In the death of Mr. Haukole Eagle Grove loses one of the early settlers and most respected and honored citizens. Mr. Haukole came to Eagle Grove in 1880, entering the employ of the Northwestern as engine wiper. He soon was given a job of fireing and in due time was promoted to engineer. He was promoted to Road Foreman of engines and held this position about fifteen years. He repeatedly refused promotions in order that he might live here in Eagle Grove among the friends and acquaintances of his younger days. He held various and important positions of trust in the city, serving several years on the city council and a number of terms on the school board. He was on the board when the present school building was built and was actively connected with the Masonic Lodge when the Masonic Temple was built. He served as master of the Masonic Lodge during the years, 1901-2-3-4. Another testimonial to his ability and business integrity was his position as director of the Citizens State Bank for many years. Mr. Haukole was the proud possessor of a Masonic Past Master's Jewell, and was a member of the Chapter, Council, Commandry, and Shrine. Mr. Haukole was a man of high ideals, of unimpeachable integrity, and unquestioned honesty in the many positions of honor and trust which he held he performed each duty with pains taking zeal. In his years of work for the company he was always fair to the company, considerate to his associates and just to those under him. All join in expressing to the sorrowing relatives sincere, heartfelt, sympathy in the hour of their great affliction.

The funeral services were held on the lawn of the home, recently completed. Rev. Tyler had charge of the services and the Congregational quartette furnished the music. The pall bearers were old friends and associates of Mr. Haukole, Messrs. A. H. Barnes, O. M. Worrell, J. W. McGrath; J. S. Keith; R. O. Packman; and Dr. Goldsmith. The masonic funeral service was given at the grave. Those who attended the funeral from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. Wm Krumm, Chicago, Robt. Haukole and wife of Milwaukee and Chas. Haukole of Canyon City, Colo, and Mrs. and Mrs. Elling Weeks of Pittsburg. Kansas.

The deceased is survived by his widow, one son, Charles, of Canyon City, Colo, and one daughter, Mrs. E. O. Weeks of Pittsburgh, Kansas.
