Sterling Jennings Anderson, the son of Benjamin and Clara (Quam) Anderson, was born February 1, 1925, in Jewell, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth – moving to Story City in 1937 and graduated from Story City High School – Class of 1942". Sterling served in the United States Army during W.W.II.
Sterling was united in marriage to Eleanor Marie Abrahamson on December 15, 1945 in Story City and they had two sons, Lynn and Larry. Sterling owned and operated Gambles/Anderson Hardware in Story City from 1955 – 1969, when they moved to Eagle Grove. He was the office manager for Oldson Plumbing until his retirement in 1987. Eleanor preceded him in death on June 19, 1995. On August 17, 2000, Sterling married Roi Anne Gearhart in Eagle Grove.
Sterling was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City; Story City Town Council; Co-founder of Story City Scandinavian Days and was active in restoring and operating the Story City Carousel. He was also a member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church - served on the church council; Lions Club; Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce and Paddle Wheel Players. Sterling received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Governor Terry Branstad for his volunteer work in Eagle Grove schools and many civic organizations. He made the Veterans Honor Flight to Washington D.C. honoring WWII veterans and he and his long-time friend, Howard Johnson visited Norway.
Sterling passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 91 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Eleanor; granddaughter, Brooke Anderson; sister, Sarah Gere; nephew, Steven Gere; brother, Arling Anderson and his wife Ona; nephew, Paul Anderson and niece, Donna (Anderson) Asleson.
Survivors include his wife, Roi Anne Gearhart of Eagle Grove; sons, Lynn Anderson and wife Diane of Naples, FL and Larry Anderson of Randolph, NJ; grandson, Tyler Anderson and wife Lisa of Libertyville, IL and their daughters (Sterling's great-granddaughters): Ella, Ava, Eleanor (Nora) and Georgia and grandson, Timothy Anderson of Denver, CO.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 21, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Jason Cooper officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a Prayer service at 6:15 pm at Foust Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Story City Municipal Cemetery on Monday at 2:15 pm.
