Mary Lucy Flaherty was born on January 4, 1916, the daughter of James and Teresa Taft Flaherty, at Fort Dodge. She received her high school education at Corpus Christi High School in Fort Dodge, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1934. Mary then taught for two years in the Moorland school system. On August 21, 1940, Mary was united in marriage at Fort Dodge to John Sterling of Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove, and operated Sterling Hardware there for 46 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Mary Lucy Sterling died during surgery at the Kossuth County Hospital, Algona, following a car accident early Wednesday morning, December 27, 1989. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother. She is survived by her husband, John, Eagle Grove; two sons, John Jr., Woolstock; and Joseph, Burnsville, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Marie) Jackson, Omaha, Neb.; and Mrs. David (Anne) Hanson of Buda, Texas; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Wayne Droessler officiated, and burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
