August 1, 1868 --- April 23, 1947

The death of Charles I. Thayer, aged seventy-eight, of this village, occurred on Wednesday after a long period of ill health. Mr. Thayer was born in Oakland Valley, IA., the present site of Popejoy, IA. on August 1, 1868: He was the son of Dr. W. A. and Nancy (Crittenden) Thayer and came to Cooperstown while still a boy. He attended Cornell University, and following that, operated the farm on which his mother and father lived just outside the village on the lake road. The farm is at present owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edgar T. Chapman. On June 28, 1892, he was married to Fannie Ingalls of Springfield Center, who survives him, together with a son, J. William Thayer of this village, and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret N. Cobbett of Tarrytown. Surviving also are three nieces, Mrs. Fred P. Fuller of Cooperstown, Mrs. Frank Davenport of Geneva, la., and Mrs. Fred Reimers of Portland, Ore. Mr. Thayer was associated with the Mohican Garage for a number of years until he was forced to retire because of his health. He became a member of Otsego Lodge, No. 138 F. and A. M. on April 17, 1900.

Masonic funeral services will be held on Friday evening at 8 o'clock at the Tillapaugh Funeral home and services will be held on Saturday afternoon at his home at 89 Pioneer street at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. Leonard W. Steele of St. Faith's School in Saratoga Springs officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood cemetery.
