SHEFFIELD — Edward Frederick Schwierjohann, 83, passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2016 at the Sheffield Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield with Rev. Ken Livingston presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield, with Veteran's Honors by Harlow Ray Massee Post #277 American Legion. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at First Grace Baptist Church, 404 E. Gilman, Sheffield.

Ed was born on Aug. 15, 1932, to Herman and Anna (Steenhard) Schwierjohann near Rockwell, IA. He attended country school at Rockwell and Sheffield until 8th grade. He then helped his dad on the family farm. Ed was drafted into the Army infantry during the Korean War. He served honorably and was a member of the Sheffield American Legion.

Ed met his wife, Norene (Vierkant) while he was in the Army; they were pen pals and while he was on leave they had their first date. He took her to meet his folks on their first date; he knew she would be the love of his life, and they were married March 20, 1955, at Meservey Reformed Church. They were married for 61 years. The couple lived in Sheffield with their two children, Rick and Lori.

Ed started working for the City of Sheffield in 1956; he was the Cemetery Custodian, Water, Wastewater and Street Superintendent. He retired in September of 1991 after 35 years of service. He then began repairing small engines in his Small Engine Repair Shop. Ed loved working on his 1968 Ford Pickup, fiddling with lawn mowers and other small engines. He always had a large vegetable and flower garden and the best looking lawn in town. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed traveling the US camping with his family in the Pickup camper. Ed and Norene enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona, where they made many friends throughout the US and Canada.

He loved animals and rescued many dogs over the years which were cherished members of the family. Ed was always willing to help a friend in need; he helped many friends and family with building projects and remodeling over the years in addition to building his home in Sheffield.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Anna (Steenhard) Schwierjohann, his sister AnnaMae (Schwierjohann) Marquardt, brother-in-laws Jerry Marquardt and Wayne Reiher. He is survived by his wife, Norene (Vierkant) Schwierjohann, Sheffield; son Rick (Bonnie) Schwierjohann, Rockwell; daughter Lori (Dean) Endriss, Hampton; brother Clarence (Karney) Schwierjohann, Glenville, MN; sister Nadine Reiher, Hugoton, KS; grandchildren: Jason (Stacy) Endriss, Cassie (Sean Ferguson) Endriss; step-grandchildren: Troy Meinders, Krista (Brad) Kramer, Tyler Meinders; and step-great-grandchildren Jacoby and Avianna Kramer, and his beloved dog, Abby.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Sheffield Care Center, and Belmond Hospital for their care of Ed.
