MESERVEY — Cheryl Barkema, 72, of Meservey, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at First Reformed Church in Meservey with the Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Retz Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St., Thornton.
Cheryl was born May 22, 1943 in Belmond, the daughter of Donald and Berniece (Bohlen) Scott. She graduated from Alexander High School with the class of 1962. On Feb. 23, 1963, Cheryl was united in marriage to Donald Barkema at the Alexander Methodist Church. They lived in Ames while Don attended Iowa State University, then moved to Marshalltown where Don worked as a farm hand for a year and a half. They moved to Meservey in 1966 where they have farmed for the past 50 years. Here they raised their three daughters. Cheryl was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. She worked at Country Threads Quilt Shop in Garner for seven years, and later in Clear Lake at Eva Marie's Home and Gift. Both jobs allowed her to meet many people which she greatly enjoyed.
She enjoyed quilting and making keepsake craft items. She was known for her decorating skills and loved to help others decorate their own homes. Spending time with her grandkids and attending their school and sporting events was her greatest joy. She loved to drive her car to visit her children and grandchildren. She loved to explore antique stores and vintage shops in search of unique items. She really had an eye for finding that special piece to add to their home.
Left to cherish her memory is Donald, her husband of 53 years; three daughters: Jill (Terry) McGuire, Sterling, Illinois; Julie (Nate) Brammer, Ames; Kari (James) Leedom, Katy, Texas; seven grandchildren: Rachel and Nick McGuire; Bo, Alex and Emilee Brammer; Megan and Madison Leedom; two brothers; Dennis Scott, Mason City; Danny (RoJean) Scott, Sioux City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Don and Berniece Scott, aunts Lillian Campbell and Frances Larsen, and sister-in-law Judy (Dennis) Scott.
