ESCONDIDO, CA - Fred Carrol Cox, 88, died Saturday, September 5, 1998, at Oakhill Residential Care Center in Escondido, California. Born November 23, 1909, in Guthrie Center, Iowa, he lived in Escondido for 63 years. Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary "Eleanor" Cox, on July 19, 1998. Mr. Cox is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ross Dale and Christine Cox of Escondido. Sisters-in-law, Betty Barber of Escondido; Irene Lettow and Ester Mae Cox of Iowa Falls, Iowa; brother Marion Cox of Penn Valley, California; grandson Chad M. Cox of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter Marcy D. Hindrix of Yuma, Arizona.

Mr. Cox moved to Escondido from Popejoy, Iowa, in 1934. He met his wife while playing tennis with friends at Escondido High School. They married in Las Vegas on May 30, 1940. Mr. Cox graduated from high school and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa at Ames. After moving to California in 1934, he went to work for the Union Oil Company from 1935 till 1941 when he left to fight in WWII. In 1945 he returned to the Union Oil Company and retired in 1965.

A graveside service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Oakhill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Escondido Boys & Girls Club, 115 W. Woodward Ave., Escondido, California 92025. Alhiser-Wilson Mortuary is handling arrangements.
