Harvey A. Chapman, age 93. Died March 6, 1998. Preceding Harvey Arthur (Chappie) in death were his mother, Julia Wilson Chapman of Kerney, Mo.; his father, John Edward Chapman, of Barton-on-Humber, England and subsequently Belmond, Ia.; his wife of 58 years, Ruth M. Chapman; brothers Grant, John, Charles, Edward and Elmer; and sisters Dorothy Kringle and Garnet Chapman. He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Chapman, his daughters Barbara K. (Curt) Nelson and Mary Lynn (Guy) Hathaway; his sister, Sylvia Soma; his grandchildren, Lynn Nelson and her partner, Michael Keeler, Nancy (James) Michael, Kurt Nelson, Erik (Roni) Nelson, Jennifer Hathaway, Julia Hathaway, Christopher Hathaway, and Claire (Sean) Miller; and many great-grandchildren.

Chappie was the first graduate of Belmond, Ia. High School to ever complete his college education. He graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Iowa State College at Ames in 1927 and served as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserves for 10 years. He began his career as a salesman for Standard Oil and worked for 26 years as a manufacturer's representative for U.S. Graphite, a division of Wickes Corporation in Saginaw, Michigan. He was a member of the Shriners and Masons during the 1940s and started his own manufacturing business in White Bear Lake in 1945, which he named Manitou Manufacturing. He was well known throughout White Bear Lake for his unusual work ethic and his business acumen, but what has made Chappie a hero to family and neighbors was his unfailing attention to friends, grandchildren and small animals. He knew the true meaning of life and didn't leave this world with regrets about spending too much of his time in the pursuit of wealth or other material interests -- although he was indisputably successful in his business and professional endeavors. Chappie's favorite sayings were "Get cracking!" and "If you don't do anything, you won't make any mistakes." He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by family, friends, employees and the community of White Bear Lake. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, March 10 at JOHNSON-PETERSON Funeral Home, 2130 Second St. (Hwy. 61 and Second Street in White Bear Lake). Funeral services will be at 11:30a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 4821 Bloom Ave. in White Bear Lake. A private burial will precede the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to HealthEast Hospice, 69 Exchange St., St. Paul, MN 55102 or to the donor's choice.
