Mary A. Whaley, 88, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital. Mrs. Whaley was one of 10 children and grew up on a farm in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She married Vern Whaley in 1929, and their wedding was financed by a $500 gift from boxer Jack Dempsey. She lived most of her adult life on the Northwest Side of Chicago. "She was the great spiritual rock of the family," said her son Dr. John Whaley. Other survivors include her husband; a son, Mark; a daughter, Margaret; two sisters; 25 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. at St. Viator Church, 4170 W. Addison St.
