FORT WORTH - Richard E. Vaughn, 78, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and bomber radar operator, died Tuesday at home. Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at Shannon North Funeral Chapel. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials: Goodwill Industries or a charity of choice.
Richard Vaughn was born April 9, 1918, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Col. Vaughn served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During World War II, his plane was shot down over Austria and he was taken prisoner by the German forces. In 1949, Col. Vaughn was transferred to Carswell AFB, where he remained stationed for 17 years, then transferring to Minnesota, and retiring shortly thereafter. He received several medals during his tour of duty. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Vaughn. Survivors: Wife of 51 years, True Vaughn of Fort Worth; son, Tom Vaughn of Fort Worth; sister, Margaret Rae Karska of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and grandson, Adam Shipp of Fort Worth.
