Kenneth E. Kriens, age 88, of Thornton, passed away Monday, January 25, 2016 at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Funeral services for Kenneth E. Kriens will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday January 30, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Thornton. Gerald “Red” Haugland will officiate. Burial will take place in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery east of Belmond. Military graveside honors will be provided by the Anton–Juhl American Legion Post #440 in Thornton. Visitation for Kenny Kriens will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday January 29, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Thornton and will continue for one hour prior to services there on Saturday. Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Memorials may be made in Kenneth E. Kriens name to the family.
Kenneth Earl Kriens was born May 23, 1927 to John and Minnie (Meints) Kriens, in rural Belmond. He attended school in Belmond, prior to serving in the United States Army during World War II in France. On February 11, 1950 he was united in marriage to Florence Clark. To this union three daughters were born: Kristine, Koleen, and Karen. The family made their home in the Thornton area.
Kenneth worked for 33 years with the Central Telephone Company, now Frontier, in Belmond. He served as chief fireman on the Thornton Fire Department and was active in the United Methodist Church. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time hunting with his grandsons, watching their basketball and football games, throwing the ball with his grandsons, tinkering with odds and ends including old telephones, working in the garden, playing marbles and card games with family and friends, watching Hee Haw, listening to classic country and gospel music.
Kenneth survivors include wife, Florence, daughters Kristine (Keith) Pals, Koleen (Dennis) Black and Karen (Jim) Ries all of Thornton; six grandchildren, Amy Titler, Annette Wynja, Brian (Sarah) Pals, Dean (Stefanie) Black, Nicholas (Megan) Ries and Andrew (Anne) Ries; eleven great-grandchildren. A brother Richard (Linda) Kriens, two sisters Wilhelmine Vestweber and Joan Clark, several nieces, nephews and numerous other friends through-out the countryside. Kenny is also survived by an honorary daughter Donna and good phone friend, Carl. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy and Phyllis and four brothers-in-law.
