Robert E. Hess, 89, of Iowa Falls, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Hansen Family Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Private family burial will take place at the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday, Jan. 8 at the Woodley Funeral Home. Woodley Funeral Home, LLC of Iowa Falls is caring for Robert and his family.

Robert Edwin Hess was born August 3, 1926 to Virgil and Frances (Mesecher) Hess in Webster City, Iowa. He grew up in the Williams and Dows area. He had many different jobs working for farmers and driving truck. He attended country school #6 and graduated from Dows Community High School. Robert met Julia Off at the Rockwood Roller Rink and they were married on June 23, 1949 at the Christian Reformed Church in Iowa Falls. They then started farming in the Dows area. The couple continued to farm until 1979 when they built a new home in Dows. After moving to town Robert bought the Skelly Oil Tank Wagon business. He had many hobbies. Robert loved horses and ponies, red tractors and collected “Hess” oil toy trucks. He was a thirty year member of the Dows Lions Club; a former board member of the Franklin County Farmers Mutual, serving for many years as well as being a longtime member of the Dows Commercial Club and Methodist Church.

Robert Hess is survived by his wife of 66 years, Julia Hess of Iowa Falls, Iowa; his children, Duane (Mary Kaye) Hess of Dows, Iowa, LeAnn (John) Snyder of Dows, Iowa, Patricia (Denny) Kuhlers of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Lori (Howie) Hoffman of Johnston, Iowa; ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a brother, Richard Hess of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: James and Virgil Jr; one sister, Margaret and a son-in-law, Jeff Schram.
