Walter Engmann Carlson was born March 5,1899 near Leland, Iowa the son of Tobias and Olena Carlson. He was baptized April 2, 1899 at Winnebago Lutheran Church near Leland. He received his elementary education in the Leland school. In 1922 he graduated from Waldorf College Academy and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1926 from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. In the fall of 1926 Rev. Carlson accepted a high school teaching position at Central Point, Ore. The following year he entered Luther Theological Seminary, St Paul, Minn, in 1927 and received a degree of Candidate in Theology in the spring of 1930. In June of that year he was ordained at Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minn.

On June 30, 1930 Walter Carlson was united in marriage to Solveig Moen in Minneapolis. From 1930 until May of 1938 he served as pastor of Benton, Bethlehem, and Conroy congregations with their residence at Norway, Iowa. That same year he was installed as pastor of Bethany Lutheran Congregation of Leland, Ill. where he served for eleven years. From November 1949 until September 1962 he was the pastor of Our Saviors and St Paul's Parish, Stanhope, Iowa. He served Deer Creek Lutheran congregation in Carpenter, Iowa until January 1965. From January, 1965 until December 1972 he served as visitation pastor for Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Carlson assisted as visitation pastor from 1971 through 1973 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City.

The Reverend Walter E. Carlson, 95, of Eagle Grove died July 2, 1994 at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove. Survivors include a son, Walter E. Jr. and wife Claudette of Chicago; daughters, Diane Schroeder and husband Donald D. of Clarion; Mary Johnson and husband William R. of Belmond; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther Johnson of Clear Lake and Arlotte Henderson of Garner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Solveig, on November 28, 1993; his parents; brothers, Clarence, Eddie, Rueben and Selmer; and sister, Thelma Gangsei.

Funeral services were Wednesday, July 6, 1994 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Revs. Lyle Peters and Maynard Moen and Ray Roden officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
