October 12, 1905 --- May 17, 1989

Final rites for Mrs. Gaylon (Ardith) Johnson, 83, Lowden, were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, May 20 with burial in the Belmond cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson died at Mercy Medical center, Cedar Rapids, May 17. The daughter of William and Edith Oliver Humphreys, she was born at Eagle Grove Oct. 12, 1905. She attended Drake University and Iowa State Teachers college and was a teacher in the Eagle Grove and Des Moines school systems.

She was married to Gaylon Johnson in Des Moines Sept. 23, 1938. He died in January, 1982. She lived in Belmond before coming to Lowden.

Mrs. Johnson was named "Cedar County's Outstanding Senior Citizen" in 1986. The award came as the result of her many civic and volunteer activities in the Lowden area where she had made her home for 10 years. Her sewing talents were used to benefit the disadvantaged and needy and can be found in local nursing homes. She was a favorite visitor in nursing homes, often accompanied by her dog to entertain the residents. She was a member of the Research club and was involved in work at Camp Courageous. She was recognized by the Red Cross for her volunteer work during the tornado in Belmond in 1966.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Marjorie) Corrick, Lowden, and 3 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 brothers.
