Sharon K. Nelson, the daughter of Willie and Alice (Medlin) Nelson, was born August 27, 1943, in Mason City, Iowa. Sharon was the fourth of five children to bless their union. As a child, she grew up on her parent’s farm in Union Township, Cerro Gordo County, near Thornton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thornton. In her youth, a favorite occasion was when her dad would take the kids on fishing excursions. Sharon attended Ventura Schools, graduating in the class of 1962. During her high school years, she played and excelled on the Ventura High girls basketball team. Her and her teammates played in the Iowa High School Girls State Tournament in 1960 reaching the semifinals. Sharon received award recognitions for her tournament play. Her father was her number one fan during her basketball career. She was definitely the “apple of her father’s eye” growing up.

Sharon was united in marriage to Craig Larson on June 8, 1962, at the Klemme United Methodist Church. The couple’s union brought two beautiful children into the world, Kay and Scott. Following their marriage, Sharon and Craig farmed together and owned and operated C & S full-service and filling station and DX Bulk Jobbing, Inc. on Highway 69. Sharon was always an integral partner in all of her and Craig’s business and farming endeavors. In farming, she worked alongside Craig driving machinery and doing chores. Over the years of operation of the service and gas station, she was the “Chief financial planner” and kept the books. The two worked very hard and dedicated themselves to it’s operation until 1983. Sharon also rode shotgun and assisted Craig in his trucking career until Polycythemia forced her to relinquish this role. In addition, Sharon and Craig maintained, mowed, and meticulously manicured the fairways, greens, and rough and Slippery Elm in Klemme, the Belmond Country Club and the Clarmond Country Club near Lake Cornelia. The two enjoyed playing in couple tournaments and with close friends. Sharon loved to raise flowers and huge vegetable gardens and was always canning the fresh produce for the months ahead. During their times of Craig’s trucking, many large rocks were picked up in different states and would return to Iowa to be included in her beautiful gardens.

Sharon’s grandkids and great grandkids were dear to her. They and other family will fondly cherish memories of gatherings that would often be topped off with Sharon’s “family famous” homemade pizzas and baked goodies. Sharon was active in the Klemme U.M.C.W. and taught Sunday School for many years. Sharon’s life might be summed with “four F’s”: Faithfulness to Craig, her family, and her church life, Fun in her times of relaxation and hobbies, Friendship to all who had the opportunity to be in her life, and Fierce in her battle with her health for many years.

Her legacy will burn brightly in the hearts and minds of her husband and life partner of nearly 54 years, Craig Larson, Klemme; daughter Kay (Roger) Hanson, Klemme; son Scott (Candi) Larson, Nora Springs, IA; sisters Phyllis (Ron) Brozik, Garner, IA, Lynn (Lon) Hagen, Forest City, IA; brother Jack Nelson, Alden, MN; aunt Doris (Donald) Johnson, Northwood, IA; grandchildren Danielle (Jeromie) Holland, Britt, IA, Megan (Brent) Willis, Klemme, IA, Mathew (Lezah) Hanson, Klemme, IA, Morgan Larson, Nora Springs, IA, and Holden Larson, Garner, IA. Seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, brother Darold Nelson, her in-laws Carold and Thelma Larson, and brother-in-law Robert Larson.
