Mrs. Ben Thompson Died at Sioux Falls Monday, Nov. 19

Bertine Storhow, a daughter of Thor and Ingeborg Storhow, was born in Winneshiek county, Iowa, the 11th of December 1859. As a child she received Christian Baptism administered by the pioneer Lutheran pastor, Rev. U.V. Koren, of Decorah. When she was about five years old her family moved to Southern Story county, Iowa. Here she grew to womanhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. M. F. Wiese at the Fjelborg church, Huxley, Iowa. Preceding her folks by one year she came to Emmet County in 1881, together with her sister, Mrs. Ole Apland, and family.

In 1885 she was united in marriage to Ben Thompson Berhow. Having purchased a farm just across the line in Minnesota they farmed there a few years. Then they sold the farm and moved to Des Moines where Mr. Thompson was employed as coachman for a Dr. Turner. After seven years residence in Des Moines they moved to a farm at Hardy, Iowa. After some six years they disposed of the farm and moved to Estherville coming here in 1900. Shortly after their arrival here they united with the Estherville Lutheran church of which they have continued to be members. Mrs. Thompson was skilled as a nurse and many are remembering with gratitude the help she so willingly gave to the sick and suffering as long as she had the strength to do so.

Mr. Thompson died a year ago February 1st and since that time Mrs. Thompson has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Vagle of Sioux Falls, S. Dak. She has been more poorly than most of her friends here realized and has been steadily bedfast a year. Her sick room was gladdened by the visits of the Sunshine Committee of First Lutheran church of Sioux Falls, by the pastor, Rev. Olson, and other Christian friends.

Mrs. Thompson passed away quietly Monday morning, November 19th, at 3 o'clock. At the age of 74 years, 11 months and 8 days. She leaves to mourn her departure three children, Mrs. George Vagle of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bernie of Duluth, Minn., and Gladys. Two children died in infancy. She is also survived by five brothers (Henry of Puyallup, Wash.; Thor of Joliet, Ill.; Tom of Estherville; Oliver of Oregon; and Ole Storhow of New York City. There are also five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Estherville Lutheran church. Interment was made in the Norwegian Lutheran cemetery.
