Ames, IA --- Elsie Ruth Lekwa, age 87, passed away on Monday, December 28th surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, at North Grand Christian Church in Ames. Elsie was born on January 8, 1928 in Roland, Iowa to John and Charlotte Wirtz. Elsie married Darwin Lekwa on July 12th, 1946. They have share over 69 years of marriage together. They had 2 girls together - Lois Jean in Dec. 1948 and Carla Lea in Oct. 1952.

Elsie was a strong spiritual woman and after moving to Ames, she and Darwin became charter members of the North Grand Christian Church where she taught a 3rd and 4th grade Sunday school class and worked in the nursery. Elsie and Darwin loved their family and they did everything together with their girls, Lois and Carla. Elsie was a steadfast Christian, a faithful wife and completely devoted to her family.

Elsie is survived by her husband Darwin of Ames, two daughters Lois Jean Lee and her husband Cliff of Chillicothe, Illinois, Carla Lea McWilliams and her husband Tom of Westminster, Colorado, brother, Elmer (Audrey) Wirtz of Dows, Iowa and Phyllis Wirtz (sister-in-law) Hampton, Iowa. She leaves behind a legacy of 3 granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren. Preceding Elsie in death were her 3 sisters; Irene McVenes, Florence Pralle, and Loretta Chambers, her brother Arthur Wirtz and her parents John & Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to North Grand Christian Church, 919 30th St. Ames, Iowa.
