Arliss (Buffer) Tangeros passed away in Estherville on December 28, 2015 at the age of 97. She was a resident of the Estherville Good Samaritan Home since August of 2010.

Arliss Joy Welzien was born on April 12, 1918 in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Laura Welzien. Arliss grew up in Dows, Iowa where she worked as a telephone operator after graduating from Dows High School. She married Pete F. Buffer in 1941 and they had one son, Pete F. Buffer, Jr. who lives in Kalona, Iowa. Mr. Buffer, Sr. passed away in 1968. She married the late Leonard Tangeros in 1973. After her first marriage, the Buffers lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and later moved to Estherville in 1956 where Mr. Buffer worked as a telegrapher for the Rock Island Railroad. Arliss worked for many years at Anthony’s department store in Estherville. She volunteered for a variety of organizations over the years and was an active member of the Estherville Presbyterian Church.

Arliss was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, five siblings (Illa, Wallace, Marge, Vivian and Marcella) and stepdaughter Anne DeMoss. She is survived by her son Pete Buffer, Jr. and wife Shirley, her granddaughter Jamie and husband John Austin, great-granddaughter Ella Paige Austin and stepdaughter Linda Turner and family. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Arliss enjoyed about thirty years as a “winter Texan” in Pharr, Texas. She loved to dance and played cards for many years. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that donations be made to the Estherville Presbyterian Church.
