James Brian Cullinan was born in Clarion, Iowa on Dec­ember 21, 1952. He was baptized at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond and later became a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond. He attended Belmond Community Schools and graduated in 1971. During these years he actively participated in 4-H, Future Farmers of America and he was a 4-year letter winner in wrestling. He attended Parsons College from 1971-73 where he wrestled for two years and was named Outstanding Wrestler his sophomore year. After college he traveled the Eastern and Southern states and established residency in Texas. He moved back to Iowa where he helped with farming and worked at Meredith Corporation at Clarion. Art and Pottery were his indoor interests and riding horses was his way of being close to the nature that he enjoyed so much.

Surviving are his grandmothers, Magdalene Braner and Bessie Cullinan; his parents, Bob and Phyllis; brothers Bob, Mark and David; sisters, Denise and Deb.
