Goldfield veterinarian dies

Dr. Frederick H. Kelly, 80, died Monday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Ross Miller at Littleton, Colo. Although in failing health the past few years Dr. Kelly maintained and lived in his own home, for periods of time he visited the Millers. Funeral services will be this (Thursday) afternoon at one o'clock in the United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Miller, and one son Fred H. Kelly Jr. of Newport Beach, Calif, and five grandchildren. Fred Kelly, DVM, practiced in West Bend one year before coming to Goldfield in 1920 where he practiced for 43 years. He retired in 1963. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian in 1973.

Frederick Howard Kelly, the son of Louis and Mary Ann Ely Kelly, was born October 5, 1896 at Lancaster, New York. He graduated from Lancaster High School and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, College of Veterinary Medicine. He entered the U.S. Army, serving as a Lieutenant in the Veterinary Corps, until the end of the war. Dr. Kelly moved to West Bend, Iowa where he was associated with Dr. P. O. Dorweiler in veterinary practice for one year. He moved to Goldfield in 1920 and operated his veterinary practice until retiring in 1963.

He was united in marriage to Lillian Isch of West Bend, Iowa, on April 15, 1921 at West Bend. Mrs. Kelly died in July, 1973. Dr. Kelly maintained his home in Goldfield after her death and was visiting his daughter in Littleton, Colo, at the time of his death on Monday, December 20, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 15 days.

He is survived by one son, Frederick H. Kelly, Jr., Newport Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Lou (Mrs. Ross) Miller, Littleton, Colo.; five grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.

Dr. Kelly was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Goldfield. A 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Alumni Club of the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the Shetland Pony Club of America and a life-time member of the Iowa Pinto Horse Association. He was mayor of Goldfield, announcer and ring master of horse and pony shows and a member of 306 BPOE, Fort Dodge. He served one year as Veterinarian in the Los Angeles Ambassador Animal Hospital and was on the Olympic Games Veterinary staff in 1932. He also served as Master of Ceremonies at many different civic gatherings and at Veterinary Conventions, both state and national.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, and two brothers. Masonic services were held at the Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 23, 1976 at 1 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, Goldfield. Rev. Wm. McConnelee officiated and burial was in the Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield. Legion services were held at the gravesite.
