ROCKWELL IA — Mildred M. (Gray) Armatis, 85, a resident of the Rockwell Community Nursing Home and formerly of 218 Third St. N. in Rockwell, died early Tuesday morning (Nov. 22, 2005) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm St. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel presiding. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockwell. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Catholic School Chapel with a Scripture vigil service at 7 p.m. Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Mildred M. Armatis Memorial Fund.

Millie was born near Kanawha on Jan. 20, 1920, the daughter of William A. and Catherine A. (Sullivan) Gray. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to a farm near Clarion. Millie was the youngest daughter of 12 children and had seven brothers and four sisters. She graduated from Clarion High School in 1937 and then received her Normal Training Teachers’ Certificate in 1938. Millie was united in marriage to Frank J. Armatis Sr. on Jan. 24, 1938, in Clarion. Together, the couple farmed a 150-acre farm near Clarion. In 1955, the family moved to Rockwell to a larger farm which they worked until the early 1970s. Frank J. Armatis Sr. died March 24, 1987. Millie was the mother of 14 children, nine daughters and five sons.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing Mildred’s life are her eight children, Dianne (Carl) Young of Garner, Jane E. (Robert) Sturges of Rockwell, Betty L. (Alan) Miller of Fort Madison, Peggy S. Koster of Fond du Lac, Wis., Frank J. (Kathy) Armatis Jr. of Stillwater, Minn., Dennis J. (Vicki) Armatis of Beaumont, Calif., Donald E. (Jenni) Armatis of Rockwell, and Todd A. Armatis of Mason City; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Mildred is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Frank J. Armatis Sr.; her parents; and six of her children, Janice, Gloria, Pamela, Terry, Annette and Shirley Szabo. Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S. in Rockwell, is in charge of arrangements.
