July 5, 1924 --- May 19, 1983

Virgil D. Claude, 58, longtime Webster City resident, died Thursday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient the past week. He had been in failing health the past three years. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Paul D. Williamson officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery. Flag folding ceremonies will be conducted by the American Legion Post 191.

Virgil Dean Claude, son of Peter and Hazel Frakes Claude, was born July 5, 1924, on a farm near Woolstock. He was reared and educated in that area. He entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., and was assigned to paratroopers' school at Fort Benning, Ga., where he was graduated. He served in the European War theatre, and was injured during maneuvers near Frankfort, Germany. Following his discharge, he returned to Webster City. He was married Feb. 4, 1952, to Verna Kepler Williams, and the couple continued to reside in Webster City. He was preceded in death by his wife April 19, 1982.

He is survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. Forrest (Dorothy) Teig of Atlantic, Iowa; three step-grandchildren; his mother, Hazel Mae Claude of Webster City; two brothers and one sister, Forrest Claude and Ordean Claude, both of Webster City, and Mrs. Edward (Eulalie) Hall of Story City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father and by one sister who died in infancy.

He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist church; the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
