July 3, 1891 --- December 15, 1901

Bernice E. Thorp, daughter of E. A. and L. J. Thorp, died of pneumonia, Sunday, December 15, 1901, at 11 o'clock a.m., aged 10 years and 6 months. Our community was sadly shocked about noon Sunday to hear that Bernice Thorp was dead. It was not generally believed, as Tuesday she was at school in her usual health and but few knew she was sick. Wednesday she had a cold which settled on her lungs and the doctor was called, but until the change of the weather Saturday night she seemed to be getting along all right, as the disease yielded to treatment and careful nursing. Sunday morning her lungs seemed to swell and fill so rapidly that the family began to realize her dangerous condition, and her difficulty in breathing all Sunday forenoon prepared them to see her breathe her last about 11 o'clock. With the exception of Dr. Carpenter, who was with her the last twenty-four hours, the family were alone at the time, but in a few minutes the neighbors and friends came in and every help and sympathy was given the grief stricken family who were still in the Valley of Sorrow for the young son they buried here the 3rd of last May.

Telegrams were immediately sent to a sister, Mrs. Keedie Coe, of Blue Earth Minn., and a brother, Vilah V. Thorp, at Renwick, Iowa. On account of the great distance and the storms north, the funeral was set for Wednesday afternoon, giving the absent ones a chance to arrive in time to attend.

Bernice E. Thorp was born at Renwick, Iowa, July 3, 1891, and died December 15, 1901, at the age of 10 years, 5 months and 12 days. She leaves a father, mother, sisters and brothers and a host of friends to mourn their loss. Bernice was a bright child, and of a lovable and cheerful nature that endeared her to all. She is sadly missed by her schoolmates and friends, but in her home there is a vacant place that can't be filled. God had called her to Himself to enjoy the bliss and peace of heaven. May God comfort and bless her bereaved family and draw them nearer to Him, for this makes one more tie to bind them to heaven – the loosening of one more bond of earth.
