November 5, 1829 --- February 14, 1901

Samuel David Rathbun was born in Herkimer Co. N.Y., Nov. 5, 1829. At the age of five with his parents, he moved to Wisconsin. He was married to Amanda M. Northway, Nov. 23, 1854. Nov. 17, 1862 he enlisted in Co. C., 4th Reg. Wisconsin Cavalry, and was honorably mustered out and discharged Sept. 1865. In October 1871 he moved to Hickory Grove, Wright County, Iowa, where he has since resided. To them were born three children, Eber, Ray and Corrie. The two younger died about twenty-three years ago and Eber lived near his father and helped carry in there successful fruit farm.

Mr. Rathbun was a faithful member of the Whited Post, No. 247. He has of late years been sadly afflicted with rheumatism but has recovered so much from its effects as to be able to go out and attended to business. A stroke of paralysis on Sunday, Feb 10 protracted and he passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 14.

On Feb. 17 the funeral services were held at the Hickory Grove school house, the G.A.R. having charge, and the sermon be preached by father Sands. He was buried in the Grove Cemetery by the side of his two children, where the beautiful evergreens planted by his hands stand a living monument to him.

Mr. Rathbun was a gentleman of sterling worth, honest, upright and Honorable in all his dealings. He was esteemed by his neighbors, a true friend, a faithful husband and kind father.

The fine fruit farm which he planted and cultivated so faithfully speaks of untiring industry for many years, and the rare plants and lovely trees of his love for the beautiful. But they will speak for him as they thrive and blossom, He will be remembered by all those who knew him with love and esteem.

We wish to express our gratitude to those who kindly befriended us during the sickness and in the burial services of our husband and father, especially to the G.A.R.
