Zelma (Rust) Thomas and her twin sister, Elza, the daughters of Lemuel and Lillie May (Grooms) Rust, were born December 30, 1927, at their home in rural Webster County, Missouri. Zelma attended Sparklebrook and Plank rural Webster County schools, and Niangua and Marshfield High Schools, graduating from Marshfield High School in 1947.

On May 18, 1947, Zelma married Bill Thomas at St. Paul Methodist Church in Niangua, Missouri. They made their home in Springfield, Missouri where Bill was employed at Wilson & Company and she was employed at Springfield garment factory. They were transferred to Eagle Grove, Iowa in 1955. While living in Eagle Grove, Zelma was employed at Friendship Haven as a CNA and CMA and continued her employment in geriatrics in Des Moines and Kansas City, as they were transferred. When they retired in 1989, they moved to their farm near Niangua, Missouri, and moved back to Eagle Grove in 1994.

Zelma was a member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove all the years she lived there. In the earlier years, she was active in the Church as Sunday school teacher and member of WSCS. Zelma was also a Girl Scout Leader for several years. She enjoyed crafts, particularly textile painting.

Zelma passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015, at Crestview Manor in Webster City, at the age of 87 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert and Ray Rust and sons-in-law, Billy Logue and Melvin Anderson. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Bill Thomas; daughter, Deborah Sue Anderson of Humboldt; son Gary Thomas (Laura) of Eagle Grove; grandsons, Chris Logue (Denyse) of Williams and Daniel Thomas (Statia) of Ames; three great-grandsons, Kenneth, Liam and Desmond Thomas and of her father's twenty-one children, Zelma's twin sister Elza McAfee (John) of Mt. Vernon, MO., is the sole survivor.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Heather Dorr officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
