Harold “Dean” Wallestad, 79, of Moorland passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2015. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday August 28, 2015 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Reverend Dave Grindberg officiating. Burial will follow at Fulton Lutheran Cemetery, Roelyn, IA. The visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Dean was born on January 23, 1936 in Moorland, Iowa the son of John and LaVerne (Sorenson) Wallestad. Dean grew up on the family farm west of Moorland and attended rural schools. In the sixth grade his family moved closer to Barnum and he graduated from Barnum High School. After graduating from high school he joined the Air National Guard 133rd for 6 years. During this time he attended Luther College in Decorah and graduated with a B.A. in art education and history. He was an art teacher in Forest City, Iowa for two years before he moved back to the original Austin Wallestad farm where he was born. On December 27, 1959 he married his college sweetheart Jane Baker in Kanawha, Iowa. The couple moved to the family farm in 1965. They lived on the family farm for 50 years and Dean always said it was the best decision he ever made. He enjoyed his grandkids and took many trips to the Rocky Mountains where his favorite place to stay was Estes Park. He was an avid photographer and took many photos in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Dean is survived by his wife Jane; daughter Valoie (Jerome) Quintana of Thornton, CO; son Steve (Deanne) Wallestad of Ankeny, IA; his grandchildren Jerry, Estefania, Austin, Emma and Nicholas; brother-in-law Donavon (Shirley) Baker of Kanawha, IA; nephews Darron (Denise) Baker of Eagle Grove, IA and Damon (Karin) Baker of Britt, IA and great-nieces and nephews Derek (Lisa), Jaclyn, Melissa (Ben), Brandon, Josh, Travis and Heather (Rod). He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Gaylord and Charles and his sister Charlotte. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
