June 22, 1821 --- December 26, 1910

Mrs. Matilda A. Root for many years a resident of Hawarden, died Monday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. T. E. Granger at Eagle Grove, IA. at an advanced age of 89 years. She had been in a very feeble condition for several years and had been cared for by her daughter, Mrs. E. M. Lantz, whose failing health made it necessary for both to be more comfortably situated. Ten days ago Mrs. Granger took them to her home at Eagle Grove for the winter.

Grandma Root stood the journey well, but a few days later an attack of acute indigestion set in and she was so weakened from the infirmities of old age that she soon passed into a peaceful sleep to only awaken in that realm in which she had abiding faith.

The remains were brought to Hawarden on Wed. and the funeral was held this afternoon at the old home of the deceased. The remains were then laid to rest beside those of her husband in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Matilda Ann Johnson was born in Meigs County, Ohio, June 22, 1821. She was married to George H. Root at Decatur, Ohio. In 1852 they moved to Appanoose county, IA. and from there came to Calliope, Sioux County, in 1869 where Mr. Root held the position of county auditor for several years. A few years later they moved onto a homestead near Ireton and resided there about ten years when they again returned to Calliope. She bravely shared with her husband the privations incident to those pioneer days and ever stood ready with helping hand to aid those in less fortunate circumstances. A family of ten children was born to them, five of whom still survive. Those living are Albert Root of Centerville, IA, Mrs. Eliza Lantz of Hawarden; Willis Root of Greenacres, WA, Mrs. Mary Goldfinch of Everett, WA; and C. G. Root of Barnes, N.D. The relatives here to attend the funeral were Mrs. E. M. Lantz, Mr and Mrs. T. E. Granger and daughter of Eagle Grove, IA. and C. G. Root of Barnes, N.D.
