September 2, 1848 --- September 22, 1909

After an illness of several months, during which she was confined to her bed much of the time, Mrs. Jens Peterson died at Bowbells, N. D., Sept. 22, 1909. Her death is attributed to cancer of the stomach, although she was also suffering from heart trouble. Medical aid did not benefit her and she weakened rapidly during the last month of her life and finally passed away in a stupor or sleep of 39 hours' duration. Although aware that her recovery was doubtful, Mrs. Peterson hoped to regain her strength sufficient to enable her to return to Hayfield and spend her last days with her children and among her old friends, but her physicians forbade and finally her children were summoned to her bedside. Lewis Lewison, of Council Bluffs, Ia., and Mrs. Geo. Wicker hastened to Bowbells and after a three weeks' stay there returned with the encouraging news that their mother was much better and that she might possibly live until spring. Two weeks later a message was received announcing her death.

Mrs. Jens Peterson was born in Skjien, Denmark, Sept. 2, 1848. She came to America in 1870, first to Freeborn county and shortly after moved to Rochester. In 1874 she was married to John Lewison and became mistress of a little home on a farm 2 miles east of this village where they resided until Mr. Lewison's death in 1890. The children all being too small to do the farm work the family moved to Hayfield village, where they built a home on South street where they lived until Mrs. Lewison went to Clarion, Iowa, to make her home with her eldest son, Lewis. In the spring of 1907 she married Jens Peterson and from that time until her death resided at Bowbells, N. D. In her first marriage she was blessed with five children. Mrs. Soren Moe, Mrs. Geo. Wicker, Mrs. Geo. Sheffield, and two sons, Peter and Lewis, all of whom survive her. Carrying out the wish of the deceased, the remains were brought to Hayfield Friday night. The funeral was held Saturday, short service being held at the residence of Geo. Wicker at 12 o'clock and at the South church at 1 o'clock. Interment was made at the West St. Olaf cemetery. The pallbearers were John Guibro, Knut Guibro, J. M. Amundson, Jacob C. Peterson, Ole Thorsoness and Ole Vigoren.

Mrs. Peterson was a communicant of the Synod Norwegian Lutheran church, having been a member of the West St. Olaf church until she moved to this village, when she transferred her membership to the South church. She remained steadfast in the Christian faith until her death, and it was the one great regret of her last hours that she could not be attended by a minister of her chosen church. Being among the early settlers of Hayfield township and having lived here most of her years, a large number of her old friends and and acquaintances paid her that sad.. etc.
