November 14, 1914 --- September 9, 2015

DeElda Julia Frodin, 100, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Evansdale, Iowa and Gray Hawk, Kentucky, died Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home of natural causes.

DeElda was born on November 14, 1914 in Dows, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Alma Olson Weber. She married Franklin C. Dodd on January 1, 1935 in Popejoy, Iowa, and they were later divorced. She then married Arthur W. Frodin November 25, 1951 in Evansdale. He preceded her in death August 26, 1995.

DeElda was a 1933 graduate of Dows High School. She worked as a housekeeper until moving to Evansdale where she and Franklin built a house in which she lived for 50 years until she sold it to move to Gray Hawk, Kentucky to live near her only living child, Betty, in 1999.

She was an avid gardener and loved to can and freeze food for the winter. She had lots of flowers which she shared at church on Sunday mornings. She loved to sew and made her children’s clothes and coats during hard times. Later she sewed quilts, knitted and crocheted. She was always busy. She worked as a waitress, at a factory and at Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo as an advanced Nurses’ Aide for over 20 years until she was 68 years old. Later, she worked for Secure-A-Sitter where she sat with or helped elderly people. She loved having guests in her home for meals or overnight.

She was very committed and active in church both as a Sunday School Teacher and a Ladies Guild member at the Evansdale Reformed Church and was faithful in her attendance at Gray Hawk Reformed Church in Kentucky. After moving to Kentucky, she still had a big garden with strawberries and grapes and made zucchini bread which she loved to give to her neighbors. She joined Jackson County Homemakers and enjoyed making new friends in the county and at church.

She lived with Betty and Carroll from 2003 until moving back to Iowa, and has enjoyed watching her grandchildren marry and have children. She loved having people come to visit in Gray Hawk. She even managed to go hiking in Kentucky and was always willing to travel to Michigan and to go camping in New York. She has lived a full and happy, positive life and feels blessed by God. On nights when she couldn’t sleep, she enjoyed remembering all her trips. Her grandmother, Anna T. Jetmundson, was born in Norway November 6, 1886, married Ole T. Olson. She lived to be 100 and seven months, almost as long as her granddaughter, DeElda.

She is survived by: daughter, Betty (Rev. Carroll) deForest of Gray Hawk; three sisters, Berniece Peterson of Waterloo, LaVon Rastetter of Iowa Falls, and Marie (Marv) Meyer of Iowa Falls, Iowa; seven grandchildren, David (Katie) Baruth of West Union, Dale (Denise) Baruth of Estherville, Iowa, Dan deForest of Richmond, Kentucky, Nathan (Deb) deForest of Greenville, Michigan, Mark (Sarah) deForest of Rexford, New York, Angela (Tim) Houchin of Rutland, Vermont, and Sherry deForest of Gray Hawk; fifteen great-grandchildren, Jason (Amber) Hondek; Alex (Ally), Caleb (Taylor), Sarah, and Rachel Baruth; Adam Reiter; Alexis and Lance (Nicole) Brolsma; Ava, Madison, Noah and Makenna deForest; and Audrey, Oliver and Nigel Houchin; and a sister-in-law, Verla Weber of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. DeElda is preceded in death by: children, Linda Frodin, Marion Dodd, and Donna (Jack) Davis; siblings, Elaine Schroeder, Earl Weber, and Seth Weber; and in-laws, Edmond Peterson, Marvin Schroeder, and Harley Rastetter.
