Daryl Richard Harlan, was born on November 18, 1929, the son of George and Pearl Chambers Harlan at Rockwell City Iowa. He received his education in Thor, until moving to Eagle Grove in the sixth grade. He attended Eagle Grove schools and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1947. After his graduation he entered the United States Army for two years, returning to Eagle Grove, he graduated from Eagle Grove Junior College.

He was united in marriage to Janis Godfrey of Eagle Grove on June 15, 1952 at the Congregational Church in Eagle Grove. The couple has lived in Eagle Grove since that time. Daryl began working for the U.S. Post Office and had been employed for 28 years before becoming disabled from a stroke. His disability forced his retirement in 1981. Daryl was a member of the Iowa National Guard, and later the United States Army Reserve having served a total of 31 years. He was a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth, Kans. Daryl retired, due to illness with the rank of Lt. Colonel. At the time of his retirement he was a member of the 504th U.S.A.R. School in Des Moines.

He entered the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa due to his failing health on December 3, 1993. He died there on Monday, December 20, 1993. He had attained the age of 64 years, one month and two days. Daryl leaves in passing, his wife Janis of Eagle Grove; sons, John D. Harlan of Logan, Utah, and Dan R. Harlan of Rochester, Minn.; daughter Jane (Mrs. Craig) Nichols of St. Joseph, Mich., and three grandchildren. Also surviving are Daryl's three sisters, Lois Bath of Tie Siding, Wyo.; Flora (Mrs. J. Tracy) Whitaker of Aurora, Colo.; and Nelda Marshall of Mahnomen, Minn.

Mr. Harlan was a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove, where he served on various boards of the church. He was also a member of the national, state, and county Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Funeral services for Daryl Richard Harlan were held on Thursday, Dec. 23, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove. The Reverend Edgar James officiated at the 2 p.m. service and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services were in charge of arrangements.
