Jerry Dean Tom passed away at the Eldora Nursing Home, Eldora, Iowa, on Monday, September 7, 2015 at the age of 81. Jerry was born on October 5, 1933 to Alma (Gunderson) Tom and John Tom, in Britton, South Dakota. Jerry graduated from Britton High School in 1952. After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War. While serving in the Air Force, he married Carol Ackles of Michigan. They had three (3) children: Kevin Dean (Mindy) Tom of Fitzwilliam, NH; Sharon (Tom) Monk of Florida, and Kenneth John Tom. After serving in the Air Force, Jerry graduated from Dakota State College in Madison, South Dakota. He taught school in both South Dakota and Iowa. After retiring from teaching in Iowa, he remained there and lived in Dows, Iowa until his passing.

After retiring from teaching, he spent many years doing missionary work in Honduras, El Salvador and the Philippines. His hobbies included hunting and raising various breeds of birds and showing them at state fairs, etc.

Jerry will be missed by his siblings: Reuben Tom (Britton, SD); Carmen Tom (Maple Valley, WA); Alex Tom (Renton, WA); Ivan Tom (Bellevue, WA); Darlene (Tom) Selle (Mora, MN); Philip Tom (Britton, SD); Roger Tom (Britton, SD) and Judy (Tom) Ewings (Britton, SD) and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Gunderson Tom; father, John Tom; and sister, Marion (Tom) Mydland. Memorial service will be held in Britton, South Dakota, at a later date.
