ALGONA - Funeral service for Esther L. Wood, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer officiating. Burial is in the Buffalo Township Cemetery at Titonka, the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Esther Lorraine Homervold, daughter of Peter and Anna Marie Rolland Homervold, was born June 9, 1922, at Thor, IA. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1940 and attended beauty school at Des Moines, then worked at Tama, IA for a year. She moved to Algona and was married to Donald Wood February 11, 1945, at Swea City. Esther continued to work as a beautician and later was employed in food service at the Algona High School. Esther enjoyed crocheting and quilting and watching sports, including Iowa basketball and teams her son, Sig, played on and later coached. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and grandchildren. Esther was a member of the First Lutheran Church where she belonged to Women of the ELCA and Sarah Circle. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Esther died Monday evening, March 24 (2003), in the Trinity Regional Medical Center at Fort Dodge. Her husband, Donald, died April 24, 1990 and she is survived by two children, a son, Sigwel and his wife, Patsy, of Adair; and daughter, Julianna Flickinger, Algona. She has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Arthur and Arlene Homervold of Clarion and a sister-in-law, Delores Homervold, St. Paul, MN, also survive. Her parents and two brothers, Melvin and Palmer, are deceased.
