Margaret Jean (Longley) Sherman, age 86, a resident of Lacey, died on June 11, 2005 in the Panorama City Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness. She was born in Dows, Iowa on October 5, 1918 to Klemme O. and Linda M. (Damerow) Longley. Jean started school in Dows, and later graduated from high school in Bremerton, Washington. She attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Jean was a member of the first class to graduate with a Certificate in Church Administration from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1969. She held positions in church administration in Alexandria, Virginia; San Antonio, Texas; and Lacey and Olympia, Washington. Jean married Keith Sherman in Salem, Oregon on November 1, 1942. She accompanied her husband of 62 years as his 30-year career in the United States Army took them to duty stations all over the United States and the world. She lived in Virginia; North Carolina; South Carolina; Kansas; California; Montana; Texas; New York; Washington, D.C.; Japan; Italy; and Germany. Jean lived the last 33 years in the Olympia area.Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Olympia, where she sang in the church choir for many years. She was an active member in P.E.O. Chapter FW, holding offices in many capacities. She was an involved member of Officers' Wives Clubs, including a term as president while they were stationed in Virginia. She and Keith were participants in the Military Order of World Wars and the Military Officers Association of America. She received Distinguished Recognition for Lifetime Achievement from the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs in 2001. Mrs. Sherman's many interests included her family, traveling, gourmet cooking, playing bridge, music, and working crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband, Keith, of Lacey; her two children, Carolyn J. Stastny, of McMinnville, Oregon, and Geoffrey K., of Napavine, Washington; one grandson, George Stastny, Jr., of Beaverton, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her twin brothers and one grandson preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 1224 Legion Way S.E., Olympia, Washington, 98501. A gathering with the family and friends will be held in the church social hall following the service. Private inurnment will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington at a later date. These arrangements are being handled through Mills & Mills Funeral Home. In lieu of floral gifts, and in memory of Jean, the family requests donations be made to P.E.O. Scholarship Funds (make checks out to "P.E.O. Foundation"), c/o Washington State P.E.O. Chapter Executive Assistant, Heather Caverly, 17908 North Ranchette Road, Colbert, Washington, 99005; or to the Memorial Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Olympia.
