March 27, 1834 --- March 2, 1894

The funeral services of Asahel Middleton took place at the M. E. Church last Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Middleton died March 2, 1894 in
Florida. Presiding Elder Black, a warm personal friend of the family, preached the funeral sermon and the services were supplemented by the assistance of Rev. J. W. Southwell, pastor of the church, his Masonic brethren, and Grand Army comrades. Rev. Black's sermon was from the text Ecclesiastes 12:13, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." A double quartet choir gave several numbers of sublime music, and the altar was beautifully decorated with flowers. Many of the floral emblems were made by friends here of flowers brought from the beautiful southern home the deceased had chosen as his abiding place the past few years, and where flowers were in abundance when the funeral party started from the south. The remains were taken to Troy Cemetery, where his mother was lain a few month ago, followed by many friends, brethren, and comrades. The pallbearers were William Hutchinson, G. W. Pryor, C. B. Hathaway, J. O. Heckart, George Johnson, and J. N. McVicker. A prayer at the grave and the last Masonic rites completed the impressive services to the memory of an upright man, the noblest work of God's creation. Mrs. Middleton will return to Florida after visiting her mother, Mrs. Hixon, and other relatives and friends.
