DEATH OF MRS. METCALF

One of the early settlers of this community was removed from our midst Tuesday by the death of Mrs. Laura Metcalf. She had been in her usual health until a short time before her departure. She had a large circle of acquaintances who mourn with the relatives in the loss of a friend. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Reinking of the Baptist church, who delivered an appropriate sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Vernon township cemetery. Many friends of the family were in attendance to minister in such ways as they might and to show their sympathy.

The following sketch of the life of the deceased was read.

Laura Goff was born in Livingston county, N.Y., June 23, 1818 and died at the home place in Renwick, Iowa, June 25, 1901, aged 83 years, 2 days. She was one of ten children, all of whom have now joined the silent majority. On the 16th day of March, 1842 she was united in marriage to Robert Metcalf, who founded the town of Woodstock, McHenry county, Ill. From there he moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa, where he lived thirteen years, then going to Buchanan county. They came to Humboldt county in 1860 and settled on a farm now within the corporate limits of Renwick.

Mr. Metcalf died March 20,1882. To this union were born three children, one of whom died in infancy and one, Henry, died October 18,1891, leaving one son, James, who now owns the old homestead. Five grandsons also live to mourn their loss.

The deceased never belonged to any church but was a diligent reader of the Scriptures, to which her well worn Bible will testify. Her last years were made as pleasant as possible by the kind care and tender love of her grandson's wife Edith who did all in her power to make her declining days pleasant.
