Des Moines -- Ramona A. (Minor) Brooks passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on July 23, 2015. Ramona was born at home on the family farm near Kanawha, Iowa on August 16, 1931. The family eventually moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa and she graduated from Eagle High School in 1949. After graduating from the Eagle Grove Community College she taught in a one-room country school-house for two years.
Ramona married Robert Brooks from Clarion, Iowa in 1952. They lived on a house out on Lake Cornelia and then later moved to Iowa City, Belmond and eventually to Des Moines, Iowa. Ramona went back to college to get her teaching license. She received a B.S. and M.S.E. from Drake University. Ramona was a 2nd grade school teacher at Jackson Elementary School from 1966 to 1993. We remember that for many years after she retired, when out in public, former students would warmly greet her with "Hi Mrs. Brooks!" She was devoted to helping all of her students reach their full potential.
Ramona adored her grandchildren and they all have fond memories of spending time with her in the summers. She took special care to pick out birthday cards meant just for each one of them. The grandchildren also looked forward to getting cards on most of the holidays from their grandmother. Although, her family was the joy of her life she also loved clipping coupons. Every time you walked in the house she would offer you some coupons.
Ramona was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1996. Ramona is survived by her daughters Pandora Lamar (Keith) and Josianne Ishikawa (Jinsei); her sons Bix Brooks (Carol) and Welker Brooks; her grandchildren Joel Murphy (Danielle), Nigel Brooks, Jessica Brooks, Kay-Marie Lamar, Chelsea Lamar, Trent Lamar (Samantha), Millei Ishikawa, and Alexandra Johnson; her great grandchildren Ashley Murphy, Anthony Murphy, Kaylie Johansen, Rylan Lamar and Mila Lamar. She is also survived by one sister Myrtle Thielen of Eagle Grove and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
