Howard Clarence Helgevold, Jr., the son of Howard Clarence and R. Viola (Larson) Helgevold, was born May 21, 1936, on the family farm north of Holmes, Iowa. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1953 and worked for Kist Ready Mix before serving in the United States Army from July 1958 until his honorable discharge in July 1960. Howard was one of three from his company chosen by his commander to assist with security at the 1960 Winter Olympics held at Squaw Valley. On August 28, 1964, Howard was united in marriage to Arliss Rice at the United Methodist Church in Webster City. He worked as an over the road truck driver for Umthun Trucking Company for 39 years, retiring in January 2001. Howard was a member of the Million Mile Club for accident free driving.

Howard was a great husband and father, he loved spending time with his grandkids and watching them participate in activities. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, growing a vegetable garden and loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball teams play.

Howard passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion at the age of 79 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Arliss of Eagle Grove; children: Brenda Helgevold of Clarion and her family, Katie Chapman (Ayden Stepp and Autumn Estelle Robb), Jordan Chapman (Leo) and Alex Howard Hilpipre; Scott Howard Helgevold of Eagle Grove and Tricia Haupt of Hanska, MN and her daughter, MacKenzie Haupt; Lisa Wirhanowicz (Tony) of Alden and her family, Jeremy Houston (Hunter, Gracen, and Alyvia), Jon Houston and Krista Houston (Kaden) and his sister, Janice Sorenson of Fruitland Park, FL.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, 2015, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Private family graveside services will be held on Friday. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
