Mrs. Grace Bakker was born September 15, 1885, on a farm in Shiloh Township, near Wellsburg, the daughter of Herman and Trientje (Langeland) Beninga. She attended the rural school in the area. On September 9, 1909, she was united in marriage to Menne G. Bakker [marriage in Norway Township, Wright County, Iowa]. They farmed southwest of Wellsburg and in 1919 moved to a farm in Lincoln Township, near Dike. Her husband passed away on May 3, 1930. In 1945 she and her son Paul moved to Wellsburg to make their home. On July 1, 1975 she was taken to the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center to make her home. She was a long-time member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having joined by transfer of membership from the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in November of 1945.
Mrs. Bakker was taken from this life very suddenly on Sunday morning, May 11, 1980, reaching the age of 94 years, 7 months and 26 days. She leaves to mourn her passing: 1 daughter and 4 sons, Herman Bakker of Holland; Mrs. Joe (Elsie) Graves of Grundy Center; John Bakker of Dike; Louis Bakker of Dike; Rev. Paul Bakker of Byron Center, Michigan; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters and 1 brother, Mrs. Nick (Nellie) Christians of Kanawha; Mrs. Peter (Sadie) DeWaard of Jenison, Michigan; Mrs. Will (Jennie) Primus of Steamboat Rock; Herman Beninga of Grundy Center and many other relatives and friends. Preceding her were: her parents, her husband, a son, Gerald Bakker; 1 grandson and 4 sisters.
