February 17, 1944 --- April 11, 2015

Suzanne K. Schutt, 71, was called home to be with her Savior on April 11, 2015. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 20, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Des Moines, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Iles Westover Chapel.

Suzanne was born February 17, 1944 in St. Louis to Harold and Edna (Decker) Richards. She was adopted as a toddler by Charles Schutt, following his marriage to Edna in Woolstock, Iowa in 1947. Suzanne was confirmed in her faith at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Woolstock. She graduated from Lincoln High School, Webster City in 1962.

Suzanne was united in marriage to Melvin (Pete) Nixon June 3, 1962 and moved to Las Vegas. She returned to Iowa in 1964. To this union Michelle, Michael and Todd were born. Suzanne graduated from Broadlawns School of Nursing in 1971 and worked at Broadlawns Hospital as a staff nurse until moving to San Pedro. In California, she worked as a staff nurse at San Pedro and Peninsula Hospital and quickly moved into critical care. She was one of the first Mobile Intensive Care Nurses. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Redlands University in 1978 and returned to Iowa in 1979. She worked in the ICU/CCU at Broadlawns and was the Nurse Manager for many years. Later she worked at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was active in AACN and was a past Secretary and President. She worked as a registry nurse in Phoenix when visiting her sons.

Sue relocated to Phoenix in 2010 and unfortunately, due to her declining health, was unable to return to Iowa. She enjoyed traveling, reading, needlework, scrapbooking and making cards. More than anything, she treasured the time she spent with her family. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. She was a member of Life in Christ Lutheran Church, Peoria, Arizona.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Michelle Severns, sons Michael and Todd (Kathy) Schutt; grandchildren, Nicholas Schutt, Nathan, Lauren and Parker Severns, her long-time companion, Gary Harbaugh; brothers, Robert (Kathi) and Dennis Schutt; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law Matthew Severns.
