November 1, 1936 -- April 4, 2015

Lyle E. Schaefer, 78, Marion, Indiana died at 7:04 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2015, in his residence. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois to the late Roland and Marie (Lipscomb) Schaefer. He was a 1954 graduate of Kanawha Iowa High School and married Sheila M. Tremaine on March 3, 1961. She survives. Lyle was an electrician for the US Navy and retired after 22 ½ years. He received a Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Presidential Unit Citations and 2 Expeditionary Medals. He and his wife owned and operated the TLC Lawn Care business. He was a member of the Hanfield United Methodist Church, Visionaries ABF, Fleet Reserve Association, and was a member and past Commander for the American Legion Post 10. Lyle played semi-pro baseball and was the left fielder for the Iowa Sioux City Explorers formerly Sioux. He enjoyed birdwatching, gardening and coaching girl's softball and umpiring for Marion Parks and Recreation. Lyle loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Schaefer, Marion, IN; daughters, Lori (Robert) Hollinger, Marion, IN, Julane M. Crum, Yorktown, Virginia, Tami L. (Chris) Timmons, Marion, IN; sisters, Delores Hayworth, Garner, Iowa, and Charlotte (Gary) Gabrielson, Altoona, Iowa; grandchildren, Kendra Hollinger, Corey Hollinger, Justin (Emily) Crum, Jordyn Crum, Dreah Burgener, Ashli (Brett) Bishop, and Drew Burgener; great grandchildren, Bryan Call, Serenity Bishop, Felicity Bishop, Verity Bishop, Kaisen Bishop, Tanner Burgener, and Aubrey Crum. In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Mae Schaefer and June L. Friedow; and step-father, Harry Raber.

A funeral service for Lyle will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Avenue, Marion, IN, with Gary Miller officiating. Burial will be in Marion National Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Isaiah Project of the Visionaries Class of Hanfield United Methodist Church, 101 N. 400 E., Marion, IN 46952.
