Henry A. "Short" Hefty died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at West Bend Health and Rehabilitation, where he had lived since 2010. He was 89. Short was born February 20, 1926, in Renwick, IA, to Henry C. and Mildred (Rummens) Hefty. He attended Vernon Country School and then farmed until he was called to service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served his country in Okinawa, France and Germany from 1944 to 1946. He married Viola Dorothy Schipull on November 16, 1947. They farmed near Lu Verne and had four children. Viola died in 1983. Short retired in 1986. He married Laurine Jergensen on January 25, 1986.

Short served on the Lu Verne Community School Board and was a member of the American Legion and of Zion Lutheran Church in Lu Verne. He loved boating, golfing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting and playing cards. He adored children and especially loved giving tractor rides to grandchildren.

Short is survived by his wife Laurine, Lu Verne; one son, Eugene "Butch" (Virginia) Hefty, Lu Verne; three daughters: Connie (Rick) Hopper, Wallingford; Laurie (Scott) Olson, Parker, CO and Becky (Tom) O'Malley, Downers Grove, IL; seven grandchildren: Doug (Lora) Hefty, Traer; Sherry (John) Ricke, Fonda; Taylor (Heidi) Hopper, Ames; Zach Olson and fiancé Michelle Hill, Parker, CO; Nate Olson, Fort Collins, CO; Mike O'Malley, Downers Grove, IL and Bob O'Malley, Downers Grove, IL; and five great-grandchildren: Lucas and Nolan Hefty, Traer; Caleb, Elizabeth, and Joseph Ricke, Fonda; and future great-grandchildren Eliana and Nalini Hill, Parker, CO. He is also survived by three stepchildren: Judy (Steve) Froehlich, Belmond; Dale Jergensen, Gretna, NE; and Paula Hoopengarner, Humboldt; two step-grandchildren Jake Froehlich, Story City; and Chris (Janet) Sullivan, Lehigh; and eight step great-grandchildren, Dravyn Froehlich, Haidyn Mewes, Teagan Mewes, Tate Mewes, Daemean Wenzel, Jeremy Froehlich, Jilliann Andrews, and Victor Sullivan. He is also survived by brothers Ben (Kay) Hefty, Lu Verne, and Merril (Judy) Hefty, West Bend and sisters, Betty Billings, Kansas City, MO, Alma Chatman, Las Vegas, NV, Eunice (Dennis) Albright, Albuquerque, NM and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Viola, one sister, Lela, and two brothers, J.C. "Bud" and Gary, and one step-grandson Jesse Froehlich.
