Claire Ruth Schwanebeck, Age 92, of Hopkins, [Minnesota] passed away February 23, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerda and Arthur Schwanebeck and longtime partner, Marian Hume. Survived by the Soderberg family, good friends and cousins. She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, where she was the editor of the News, the student newspaper. As editor of the Echo, school yearbook, she continued her editorial interests at the University of Dubuque, from which she graduated in 1943. She was a member of the Gama Phi Delta sorority at the University of Dubuque. Upon graduation from college with a major in English, she taught English in Dows, Iowa, Postville, Iowa and Luverne, Minnesota. Besides her teaching career, she became the radio homemaker of WCAL at St. Olaf College, MN. She then turned to the secretarial field which found her as secretary to the manager of the Dubuque Tractor Works, the Shell Oil Company, Continental Oil Company, the Hughes Aircraft Company in Colorado, St. Mary's, Minneapolis plus several smaller companies. Also, she was a member of the acapella choir at the University of Dubuque and was a member of the Naval Reserve as a Yeoman 1st Class, a position she held for 6 years. Upon retirement she was a valued volunteer at the Women's History Center, St. Louis Park Schools and the Edina Art Center for many years. Special thanks to the entire staff at Augustana Chapel View in Hopkins for their care and friendship and Methodist Hospital Hospice Program. Claire donated her body to the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota and a private burial will take place at Lakewood Cemetery at a later date.
