December 8, 1807 ---- January 13, 1894

Died, January 13, 1894, at the residence of her son, Hon. S. B. Hewett, in Santa Barbara, California. Mrs. Mary E. Hewett, aged 86 years. Two years ago last fall, she went with Mr. and Mrs. Hewett to California, and apparently enjoyed her home on the Pacific coast until about eighteen months ago she fell and dislocated her hip and was confined to her bed from that time until the angel of death came and released her from all earthly sufferings. She was lain in her lowly bed, and only kind memories remain with the friends and relatives who have cause to mourn her departure.

Mary E. Allen was the wife of Sumner B. Hewett, Sr., and they came from Massachusetts to Iowa 1854, and settled on the beautiful farm near the river, where her husband died and was buried. S. B. Hewett, Jr., and wife, also Mr. and Mrs.
N. B. Paine, came with them, and each family purchased fine farms that now are numbered among the most beautifully arranged homes in Wright county. Living half way between her son and daughter, she conducted her own business affairs and remained high in the esteem of all who came within her circle of acquaintances.
