Lucille J. (Petersen) Lauden was born April 4, 1928, at Hampton, IA, the daughter of Clarence and Inez (Oleson) Petersen. Shortly after her birth the family moved to a farm near Hollandale, MN, where they lived until 1938, when they moved to rural Leroy, MN. Lucille attended country school in the Leroy area. In 1945, the family moved to a farm near Dows, IA. Two years later, the family moved to rural Alexander, IA, and at that time Lucy went to work as a housekeeper in Clarion, IA. It was during this time period that Lucille met the love of her life and partner Dorance (Ole) Lauden at the Lake Cornelia skating rink. The two dated for two years before eloping on August 1, 1948, at Hampton, IA. Following their marriage the two began farming south of Belmond for a few years before moving to a farm near Swaledale, IA, in 1951. In 1961, Ole and Lucille purchased their farm near Thornton, IA. Lucille continued to live on the Thornton farm until moving to the care center following health issues over the last several years. Ole and Lucy were blessed with two children; Dorance Jr. and Candace Jo. Raising her children and nurturing to their needs was a main focus in her life. She loved being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a hardworking wife and partner in the farming operations with her husband Ole. The couple were avid and very proficient horseshoe throwing competitors, hosting countless events at their farm and traveling throughout the country to participate in numerous competitions. Lucy entered in the World Horseshoe Championship on two occasions, bringing home the Women's World Championship in 1985. In the 24 years that followed one would often see her participating in local parades with Ole behind the wheel of their 1968 Cadillac convertible as she shared her recognition with town celebrations around the region. Lucy's love for competition carried on in her fondness for playing cards, especially "500." She truly relished opportunities to follow and watch her granddaughters; Misty and Tiffany compete in many dance competitions and venues around the Midwest where they would perform. A few of these travels brought along the luxury of Ole and Lucy being able to attend many of their favorite entertainer’s theatres in Branson, MO. such as Wayne Newton and Mel Tillis. Lucy was truly an entertainer herself and shared her musical talents on the piano and guitar with residents throughout the area at care centers, senior centers and almost anywhere she could spread her love of music. Her warm smile, bubbly personality and boundless energy would light up the place. She also loved to dance and spent many days at various senior centers and care centers dancing the hours away. Lucy was passionate about her ancestry and traveled hundreds of miles each year caring for and decorating the graves of her family, extended family and friends. She was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church and had served on funeral lunch committees and in various other roles with the church ladies. In addition to being a full time wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she had worked in her earlier years at Libby Owens Ford in Mason City. She will be remembered by her family for her warm love for them, her outgoing nature and her zest for life.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Dorance (Nancy Sweeny) Lauden Jr., Goodell, IA, and daughter, Candace (Steve) Gossweiler, Fort Dodge, IA; her grandchildren; Misty Brown, Tiffany (Shane) Berkland, Heather (Dustin) Olson, and Heath Lauden; great grandchildren, Dorion Brown, Brooklin Brown, Treise Berkland, Trenton Olson, Kaleb Olson and Wyatt Olson; one sister, Carole (Ron) Molencamp, Ankeny, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ole, her maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents, two brothers, Lowell D. Petersen and Leroy D. Petersen, two sisters, Darlene Huebner and Janet Roderick.
