November 10, 1876 --- August 2, 1900
But a few days ago, a letter came to Mrs. Jos. Dearth stating that his oldest son, Fred, of Popejoy, Iowa was quite ill, with inflammation of the bowels, which made his parents anxious about his condition but on account of his being a stout healthy young man, it was thought he would surely recover. When the message came that he was no better, his mother left immediately for the bedside of her son. The tidings sent back by her were not favorable, and last Thursday afternoon his father and cousin W. E. Rogers started for Popejoy, but before they had gone far a dispatch dated Aug. 2nd was received, announcing his death, which was transferred to them enroute, reaching them at Woodford. They continued on their sad journey, reaching Dows Friday Aug. 3rd, on which day the funeral took place. The remains were laid to rest in the Oakland Valley Cemetery.
The deceased was born on the old homestead in Blanchard, Nov. 10, 1977 where he spent all his life until four years ago when he went to Iowa. Shortly after his arrival there, he was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Sowl. Two children were born unto them, who are left with their mother to mourn their father's death. He was an honest, industrious young man; a member of the M.W.A. and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
The memorial services held at the United Brethren Church in memory of Fred Dearth, Sunday, were grand. The church was tastefully decorated. The singing rendered by the Misses Mattie and Millie Holland and Mesmers Holland and Brictson, was excellent. Rev. Smith preached an appropriate and comforting sermon. A large number of acquaintances and friends were present. The Oak Hill camp No. 1208 attended in a body, there being about fifty members in attendance.
