Roger James McGowan Resident of El Cerrito

Roger James McGowan beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend entered into rest on January 17, 2010. Roger was born to Sara Beatrice (Leinbach) and Orr Beaumont McGowan in Ocheydan, lowa on November 16, 1925. He attended schools in lowa and Nevada. Following the two years he served in the US Navy, he attended the University of Nevada, Reno, graduating in 1950. Later on, he earned advanced degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. His lifelong career in education began in a small elementary school in Hawthorne, Nevada and culminated with retirement from the California State University, San Francisco Professor Emeritus, 1987. Roger was a longtime member of the Mira Vista Golf and Country Club, El Cerrito. He served as president of the board as well as chairing the greens committee. He was an avid golfer and won many tournaments with the Senior men's group. During the early years of his retirement, he and his wife Joan enjoyed many world travels and golf trips. Preceded in death by his parents Sara and Orr McGowan, wives Bertha and Annette, brother Dr. Robert A. McGowan, and sister Mrs. Lois Lott Fry. Roger is survived by his wife Joan; stepsons Bob (Cia), Tim (Martha) and stepdaughter Diane (David); 7 granddaughters and 4 great-grandchildren. Also his brother Larry Mc Gowan, many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held January 29, 2010 at 1:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church, Berkeley, 2407 Dana St. Remembrances may be sent to American Heart Association or Feed The Children.
