The Rev. Herman Paul Senft, 78, a Lutheran pastor for more than 50 years who served congregations in New Brighton, Stillwater and St. Paul, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul. Senft, of Roseville, died after quadruple heart bypass surgery, said his wife, Gretchen.

He was the son of a Lutheran minister and was born in Spring Valley, Minn. He went to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and graduated from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1942. His first congregation was in Humboldt, S.D. Later he served in Belmond, Dubuque and North Springs, Iowa. He was at a church in New Brighton for a brief time, then at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stillwater from 1963 to 1973. He retired in 1981 and became visitation pastor at Pilgrim Lutheran in St. Paul. He served at Hosannah Lutheran (formerly Trinity Lutheran) in St. Paul on a "temporary, part-time" basis for nine years, his wife said. He retired again three years ago.

"He was very good with the children . . . [and] he was a "faithful shepherd for the older people," his wife said.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving two years as an Army chaplain. In his free time, Senft enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jim, of Maryland; daughters Jan Norris, of Woodbury, and Julie Beaton, of Eden Prairie; a brother, Dr. Otto Senft , of Colorado; a sister, Lydia Beckman, of Omaha, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 104 S. Snelling Av., St. Paul. Memorials to the church are suggested. Arrangements are by the Spielman Mortuary.

Survived by wife Gretchen, children Jim (Janet) Senft of Silver Spring, MD, Jan (John) Norris of Woodbury, Julie Beaton of Eden Prairie. Beloved grandfather of Dan and Lindsay Norris.
