Clara H. Howard, age 98, of Marathon, Iowa, died on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will follow in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation with the family present took place Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Clara Harmon Howard, the daughter of Lester and Jeanette (Cassidy) Fugett was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa on September 10, 1916. Clara spent most of her childhood years in West Liberty, Kentucky where she became a member of the Christian Church. She was a graduate of the Morgan County High School. Following high school, Clara moved to Iowa where she had relatives and she worked in restaurants. She eventually moved to Marathon, Iowa, where she had an aunt. She found an apartment and starting working in a restaurant in Marathon.

Clara met Alan Howard while residing in Marathon and they were united in marriage on October 24, 1940. This union was blessed with two children: Ronnie Lee in 1942 and Carolyn Ann in 1946. The majority of Clara's life was lived in the Marathon community and she and Alan would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on October 24, 1990 however Alan died in July of that year. Clara worked for 21 years at the Farmers Coop in Marathon. Special interests of Clara's included baking, crocheting, playing cards and reading. She was a faithful member of the Marathon United Methodist Church. Clara was a member of the Marathon Eastern Star and later the Sioux Rapids Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She held the office of Worthy Matron and served in the Eastern Star organization for more than 50 years.

Clara's life is honored and celebrated by her family which include her son: Ron, of Phoenix, Arizona; her daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Morris Larson, of Albert City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Lori (Randy) Zebedee of Spencer, Iowa, Mark Larson and adopted grandson, Raul Ramirez of Victorville, California; Matt Howard and special friend, Wendy Cherrington of Westminster, Colorado; and Kathy (Randy) Thorsen of Westminster, Colorado; 6 great grandchildren; a half-sister, Shirley and her husband, John; a half-brother, Daniel and his wife, Verda; a half-brother, Johnny and his wife, Kathy, all of Ohio; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by parents, her husband, Alan; a daughter-in-law, Paula Howard; brothers: Olin, Marion (and his wife, Bessie), Willis (and his wife, Eileen); sister, Juanita; and half-sister, Jean (and her husband, Hayden).
