January 25, 1868 --- February 10, 1951

Nels J. Arne, born of parents Jonas and Anna Treteness, was born near Bergen, Norway, January 25, 1868. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Norway. In 1888 he came to America and worked in the Bode, Iowa community. Later he came to Lake and Goldfield communities where he worked for a few years. He came to Eagle Grove, Iowa and was in the employ of the Chicago Northwestern railroad as machinist.

March 11, 1899 he was united in marriage to Olena Ekanger. To this union seven children were born. Mrs. Olena Arne passed away February 12, 1911. On December 9, 1915 he was joined in marriage to Julia Jorgenson. One daughter was born to this union. On May 20, 1935, his second wife died. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martin Norem at Norfolk, Neb., February 10, 1951.

He was a member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church and was faithful in attendance until his health failed. Mr. Arne was a warm friend of Jewish mission. He found daily comfort in his Bible.

He was preceded in death by his wife Olena and later by his wife Julia, four children who died in infancy, and one sister. Those who mourn his passing are: one son, Norman of Eagle Grove; three daughters, Anna (Mrs. Martin Norem) of Norfolk, Borghild (Mrs. Ivan Wingaard) and Katherine (Mrs. Kenneth Lalor) both of Eagle Grove; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four brothers, John of Boston, Mass., Rev. Karl J. of Tacoma, Wash., Lewis of Terrebonne, Ore., and Jacob Dale of Northfield, Minn., and one half sister, Bertha Samuelson in Norway.

Funeral services were held from the Wilson Funeral Chapel Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1951 at 1:30 p. m. and from the Evangelical Lutheran church at 2:00 p. m. Pastor B. F. Molstre officiated. Kenneth Sandven sang two solos, "Rock of Ages" and "Den Store Hvite Flok". Mrs. Marcus Boe was the accompanist. Mr. Arne was laid to rest at Rose Hill cemetery.
