November 10, 1829 ---- May 28, 1906

John Bartholomew, son of Archibald and Mary Bartholomew, was born in Broome county, New York, November 10, 1829. He was there reared to manhood. In 1854 he came west, locating in Dubuque County, Iowa, where he resided until 1864. In the spring of that year be came to Humboldt County, engaged in farming till the year 1890 when he removed to Thor where he resided until the time of his death May 28, 1906.

March 24, 1853, he was united in marriage to Cornelia LaGrange by whom he had four children, Frank J., Mary E., Robert F., and Charles L. His first wife having died September 2, 1872, he was again married February 27, 1874, to Mrs. Lucy Hotaling, a widow with one child Minnie E. They had two children by this marriage Ray R. and Eva L. He was one of the early settlers of Humboldt County, and held several important township and county offices.

In the death of Mr. Bartholomew the county loses one of its most respected citizens, a man who was well liked by all who knew him for his noble and upright character. He had been in poor health for some time but was not thought serious until May 8, when he was taken with typhoid pneumonia. All that medical skill and tender care could for him seemed of no avail and after three weeks of patient suffering he passed away. His wife and children were constantly at his bedside during his illness.

The funeral services were held at the United church of Thor, Thursday at ten a.m. Rev. Malone, pastor of the Methodist church at Hardy of which he was a member, conducted the services assisted by Rev. Sovde of the Lutheran church. The remains were interred at the Union Cemetery at Humboldt, Iowa. Thus closed the life of a true and loving father, an honest Christian and a faithful citizen. More than this we need not say. His memory will keep wholesome with all who knew him best and they may well point with pride to his record and his example as a father, a neighbor, and a citizen.
